Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a virus whose symptoms are similar to the common cold. HMPV itself more often causes upper respiratory tract infections, it can also cause lower respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia, and recurrence of asthma or worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This virus occurs more often in winter or early spring.
Symptoms of the HMPV virus include:
- Runny or blocked nose
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Fever
- Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
- Rash
This virus spreads very quickly and this virus is transmitted through:
- Direct contact with sufferers
- Touching objects contaminated with the virus
- Shake hands
- Kissing
How to prevent HMPV by:
1. Wash your hands regularly with soap and running water
2. Avoid touching your face, especially your nose, mouth and eyes
3. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing using a tissue or the inside of your elbow
4. Maintain house cleanliness and air ventilation at home
5. Adopt a healthy lifestyle with adequate rest and regular exercise
